It could cost less to produce and distribute. It could cost less to make the new hardware, as it would be more modifications to old hardware than investing in entirely new hardware.
It could cost less for consumers too.
don't be so fast to dismiss it. What happens if they can release players for $100 or less? The discs themselves could be standard DVD rate. That's a lot of money to save.

There would be WAY too much data loss once you got that many layers. It would just be a novelty with no realistic application.
If they did make a laser that could cut through that without any loss, the heat it put out would probably be enough to burn your ceiling, as the disc and cover of the player would have probably already melted.

your logic is flawed. The majority of console sales happen late in the console lifetime when they reach their lowest prices and are available to the casual mainstream.
in 5 years the original xbox sold 24 million. In 3 years (3/5 the time), the 360 sold 4/5 the total sales.

There's a great way to prove the lighting and art direction are better in gears 2.
If you take the images in the screenshots into photoshop or gimp (just select copy and paste them to a new image. Make sure not to get the black edges between them) and look at the histograms for them, Gears 2 actually has one of the best histograms I've seen for any next gen game so far.

The biggest updates over gears 1 is in interactivity. Through lower glitches, soft body physics, destructible environments, higher on screen character counts. These are all things you can't do justice to in a screenshot.
The fact that they can keep the quality up to par, and then add so much from a gameplay perspective is more than enough for me.

I think Power of green went from somewhere close to 6-9 bubbles to 3 bubbles in about 30 minutes a couple times. Not only do I not even know how that's possible without alts, but I've never seen that happen to a sony fan (I wasn't here when it was the same problem the other way around).
Either way, it's a crap tactic. I'm a little biased against sony fans for it because I've lost bubbles for saying things that are 100% fact from them. I understand it's happened both ways, right n...
Blu-Ray wasn't designed with the polymer taken into account. It was put in after the format was "finished" because they were easier to scratch than DVDs (or that the scratches affected them more, not sure).
